SS-31 (Elamipretide, also known as MTP-131 and Bendavia) is a mitochondria-targeted tetrapeptide developed by Hazel Szeto and Peter Schiller. Its sequence D-Arg-2’6′-dimethylTyr-Lys-Phe-NH2 gives it a unique ability to selectively concentrate within the inner mitochondrial membrane where it interacts with cardiolipin — a phospholipid critical to mitochondrial structure and electron transport chain function.
